I am new to labels and need guidance...
Easy steps to get you started with your custom labels
- Measuring your container or package
- Artwork design
- Request a quote
- Proof approval and printing
- Lead times
#1 Measuring your container or package
It is important to size your label so that it is at least 1/8" away from any edges or before a container surface begins to curve. This allows for the typical play required when putting labels on by hand or machine and to avoid adhesive exposure on edges, which will result in a label flagging.
At any point, remember, you can send your container in to us to measure for you. For free, of course.
- For cylindrical bottles, you may find it easiest to take a strip of paper and wrap it around the bottle, marking it where it overlaps, with a pencil.
- With a ruler, measure from the end of the paper to the mark.
- Subtract 1/8" - 1/4" from the length so that there will be a gap where the label would meet, once applied. This is standard practice for labels, as it prevents overlapping and the need to have the ends line up perfectly.
If you have a custom / tapered container, they require a special shaped, custom "smile shape" label. Send it in to us to measure for you.
#2 Artwork Design
This can often be the "scariest" part of the entire process. It really doesn't need to be. What is important to know is that there are specific industry-standard formats that are required. If you are a designer or need to pass the industry formats on to a designer, visit our Label Artwork Guidelines page.
The team here at Passion Labels and Packaging recommend Miguel Elasmar of 24klogos, Inc. Miguel has established himself a leading design and branding expert. Download Miguel's Portfolio here. From basic design to high profile branding, 24klogos, Inc is the premiere choice for label design.
If you have existing artwork that you would like to have reviewed, you can upload your artwork files to us, for a free pre-flight to ensure it meets print industry-standard requirements. Again, no charge. Free. Costs nothing. We just want to help you out and make this easy for you.
#3 Request a Quote
Visit our Quote Request Page and fill out the quick form. If you happen to have any questions about the topics, just click the icon and a window will pop up giving you and explanation.
For those of you who like to deal directly with another human being, or would like to discuss your needs in detail, just give us a call at (888) 425-3955.
#4 Proof Approval and Printing
After your order has been submitted and artwork has been received by Passion Labels, our graphics team will prepare an pdf proof for your review. This is where your responsibility to check for any errors comes in to play. Spelling, Size, Color as noted on the proof, etc. We want you labels to be perfect! If any revisions are required, this is the chance to let us know so that we can make them.
After proofs are approved, the next step is scheduling and printing on our end.
Find out more about proof types and when match proofs or press proofs may be required.
#5 Lead Times
Typical lead times for labels are between 5-10 working days from the time of your proof approval. This allows for efficient scheduling and enough time to print the job perfectly for you, then to have our inspection team work their magic to ensure all is high quality before we ship your order.
Let's get you started by filling out a Request for Quote.
